For the last 6 weeks I have been reviewing the ergoPouch ergoCocoon 0-3 months 2.5tog with my newborn baby Austin.
Sleep to a new mum is a precious commodity and I would happily pay and try a product if it meant better sleep! As I have mentioned before, my older child Hayden was never a good sleeper. This was one of the hardest things I found about being a new mum the first time, the sleep deprivation.
One thing I never tried with Hayden was to swaddle him. I was quite interested in trying this, as I know several friends babies who loved to be swaddled as newborns. Needless to say I was really happy to get the opportunity to try out ergoPouch sleeping product.
Design and packaging
The packaging was attractive and eye catching. It comes with a handy room thermometer too! The colour was mint star, a lovely colour for either sex. There are other colours available including Rhubarb and natural.
The ergoCocoon is a swaddle sleep bag with a 2-way zip and arm poppers. It has a bell shaped bottom to promote healthy hip development, and is classified as hip healthy by the international hip dysplasia institute.
It is made from an organic cotton stretch jersey outer layer and an inner layer of bamboo viscose terry, filled with 100% organic cotton. When the ergoCocoon arrived it looks and feels like a great quality product.
How did we get on with it?
Unlike traditional swaddles where you have to use origami techniques to wrap them up correctly, the ergoCocoon was extremely easy to get on. No faffing necessary. Just place the baby in the bag and zip up!
One of the great things about this product is that you can have it as a swaddle with the arm holes poppered closed and then transition to a more traditional sleeping bag with the arms out just by opening the poppers.
When I first put Austin in the ergoCocoon with his arms enclosed I thought it looked a bit uncomfortable, but he was calm and seemed quite happy in it!
So how was it for sleeping in?
Well he slept really well in his ergoCocoon, sleeping overnight for periods of 3-4 hours in between feeds. Much better than Hayden ever slept. Now it occurred to me that perhaps Austin is just a much better sleeper than Hayden was, and that using the ergoCocoon was just coincidence. This may be. However we were forced to try a couple of nights without the ergoCocoon (after Austin had weed on it!). During these nights Austin didn’t sleep nearly as well and was quite unsettled without it. Therefore I believe the ergoCocoon is definitely helping him sleep well.
One of my favourite features is the 2-way zip. Now having any zip on baby attire is quite a god send I think. They might not look as attractive as pretty buttons, but they are a damn sight more practical and quick (speed is of the essence with wriggly babies!). The 2-way part is great because it means you can open up the ergoCocoon from the bottom upwards. So you don’t have to take the baby out in order to change the nappy. This is a bit of a lifesaver in the middle of night, when your half asleep, as the last thing you want to be doing is removing layers of clothes and redressing. The zip has a covered at the top t prevent any rubbing or irriatation to baby’s skin.
We have washed this product multiple times in the few weeks we have been using it. It washes really well, no running or dulling of the colours and more importantly no shrinkage! One of my only criticisms is that you can’t tumble dry it!
I would really recommend this product for anyone wanting to swaddle or just as a newborn sleeping bag. I have already ordered another one in the next size up I’m that impressed!
