Blogging update- 1 month in..

Today marks one month since I started this blog, so I thought I would write a little post about how it’s been going. I think it’s fair to say that I knew nothing about blogging before starting and was quite naïve about what it actually entailed and the time involved. I guess I thought that it was just about writing posts, how wrong I was!

I had thought about writing a blog for a while and finally bit the bullet last month after encouragement from my husband Mike. He helpfully told me about using WordPress and how to get a free account set up. I then did a bit of googling about starting a blog and mummy blogging, mostly reading advice from other blogs. This was really useful but also pretty confusing, I had suddenly entered a world with a lot of phases/words that meant very little to me e.g. Hosting/themes/HTML/follow links/SEO etc. The realisation of the social media aspect of blogging was perhaps the most unexpected part of all.

Social media playing such a large part in the world of blogging probably seems bloody obvious, but as I said before I was pretty naive. Of course, after publishing a post you needed to let people know about it in order for it to be read, I just hadn’t really thought much about the promotion of the blog beyond friends and family. Before starting the blog, my only social media platform was Facebook which I used like the majority of people for browsing and being generally nosey in other people’s lives! After reading about the importance of social media in blogging, I now have a Facebook blog page, instagram and twitter account and I think I am just about getting to grips with these slowly but surely! I think My husband has found it quietly amusing how enthusiastic I have been about instagram and twitter after discovering them years after the rest of my peers including him! I am particularly enjoying using instagram at the moment.

In terms of writing the blog posts, I am really enjoying it and find it such a good release. It’s very therapeutic to just write down your thoughts especially now I am back on maternity leave so during the day it’s just myself and Hayden, who is not talking yet! Ideally I would like to be writing and publishing posts a bit more frequently than I am currently, but I find it difficult to write bits of a post and come back to it later. I prefer to sit down quietly on my own and just write the post in full, this with a toddler in tow is often just not possible or certainly not during the day. I think I probably need to work on scheduling my time better particularly in the evening. I am about to start a bullet journal so I am hoping this will help with my scheduling and organisation.

I would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all my family and friends who have been extremely supportive of my blog, without your support I would not have the confidence to continue. It’s lovely to that people have been reading the blog and enjoying it, I really appreciate any comments/likes/shares that I have received.

I know I still have a lot to learn about the world of blogging, but what I can say so far is that I am really enjoying it, both the writing the actual blog but also the social media side, I have ‘met’ online several other mummies and I am enjoying reading about their experiences and lives and hope that I can continue to do this with more people. I am also enjoying, perhaps unexpectedly, finding out more about the technical side to blogging. It is very interesting albeit quite confusing to me, as I have never been particularly technicologically minded.

My goals for the next few months are

  1. Write and publish 2 blog posts a week
  2. Try to increase my twitter/instagram/Facebook/Wordpress following- I don’t have a target in mind, but would just like to see the blog being read more steadily (hopefully!)
  3. Be more organised with writing/drafting/planning posts ahead of time
  4. Be brave and continue to try VLOGGing- my first attempt was last week and was pretty awkward!
  5. Continue to find out more about WordPress and the technical side to blogging
  6. Engage with more people on instagram/twitter/Facebook
  7. Try to get a good blogging/life balance so my husband doesn’t threaten me with divorce for becoming blogging obsessed! (I am one of those all or nothing people when I find something I’m interested in, an example being when at uni and starting the gym, I then went religiously twice a day 6 days a week.. though sadly it didn’t last! Plus who has that much time now!)

Anyway not a normal mummy related post and won’t interest some of you, but thought a blogging update was a good thing to write about and help me organise my thoughts/reflect on it. Although I have written those goals above, I am also acutely aware that I am about to have a newborn baby in a couple of weeks time, so best laid plans…. we shall see…

  1. It’s tough starting a new blog and I understand the all or nothing thing. Definitely hit a raw spot with me. You’ve really got a nice balance of doing it for yourself though. I often fall into the pit of too much social media connections and not enough writing. My RawMum blog is new too and I’m just writing it for honesty and connecting to people like me. Fingers crossed for our fledgling blogs.
