First tastes with HiPP Organic

As you may know Austin is now 6 months old and we felt  he was well and truly ready to start weaning, he kept lunging at food whenever Mike, Hayden or I were eating something!

So I was really excited for Austin and I to be part of the HiPP Organic Moments team. In preparation for weaning we recently received a lovely hamper from HiPP organic containing a selection of the new ‘pure vegetable’ jars as well as a few other stage 1 (from 4 months upwards) savoury jars for us to try as part of the first moment- First Tastes!

Austin checking out the HiPP organic hamper and is keen ti get eating!

I couldn’t wait to see what Austin made of these new tastes and textures.

The first jar we started with was the pure white carrot, it didn’t really smell of much, a thin and smooth consistency and tasted to me of carrot but it was a very subtle flavour. Austin though seemed to love it and demolished the whole jar in one sitting!

The Following day whilst out and about I took the pure peas jar to try. I wasn’t keen to try this as I not a fan of peas myself but I did. Much thicker in consistency and less smooth in texture than the carrot one, like well mashed peas. Taste wise there was no mistaking it was peas, was a stronger flavour, so for someone who doesn’t like Peas unsurprisingly I didn’t enjoy it. Seemingly Austin felt the same as me and wasn’t really keen on the pea either! I did try him again with it as I know sometimes it can take babies a few attempts to get used to new flavours but still wasn’t enjoying it.

Next up we tried the pure parsnip, this was similar to the white carrot one in colour, consistency and texture but smelt and tasted much stronger of parsnip and I rather liked it!, Austin also really enjoyed this one too and happily ate the jar.

By now I thought Austin was ready to try some complex flavours so moved onto the savory jars of buttered vegetables, mediterranean vegetables with aubergine and vegetables with fish pie. These were all a bit thicker consistency and had a bit more flavour to them, my favourite was the mediterranean with aubergine one, it was like a nice pasta sauce. Austin really enjoyed them all too but did seem to less sure of these jars at least at first, and I suspect that was they were that much thicker. His favourite was the vegetables with fish pie, that was quite fishy in smell but that didn’t put him off at all!

So far Austin is really enjoying finally getting some food other than Milk, and every meal time is always super keen to do it himself too Mr Independent. As you can see from the photo below with Austin attempting to feed himself his buttered vegetables jar!

Overall Thoughts

I think the HiPP jars provide a great choice to start weaning with. Although it’s an exciting time, it can also be quite daunting wanting to make the right choices with what to feed them and how etc. When I first started weaning my eldest Hayden, I spent time making single vegetable purees and freezing them in little pots. But now having 2 children under 2 I just don’t have the time for all that, so its great that I can still give Austin the same good start but with the convenience of HiPP Organic. Although to us adults, the pure vegetable jars don’t have a strong taste, I think they are probably great first tastes when babies are just starting out. As all they have ever tasted before is milk, and even mild flavours will be quite an experience to them, you don’t want to overwhelm them after all.

Oh I love the faces they pull when they try something new! Weaning is always scary, it’s a huge step and a lot more complicated than the first 6 months of feeding, but looks like he’s going to do pretty well at it….!

We used Hipp thoughout weaning and onwards. Jayden was all about cauliflower cheese and then pasta. Joben just eats anything except pasta!
