Introducing Austin Arthur

Introducing Austin Arthur

After all that waiting and impatience, our second baby boy arrived on Sunday 19th march at 9.16am. He was born by emergency C-section after a long night of being induced and him not tolerating the contractions. I won’t go into the details now, I think I need a bit more time to reflect before writing Austins Birth story. He weighed in at 8lb 3oz.

I can’t believe he is already 1 week old! The week has really flown by. We stayed in hospital for 2 days, and arrived home in glorious sunshine on Tuesday morning.

After a whole day with our new baby boy and much discussion between Mike and Myself, we finally decided on a name for our baby boy- Austin Arthur Gumn!

It was a bit strange to start calling him Austin after so long referring to him as Baby, but it soon became natural and now he seems like Austin was his name all along!

We have had a fair few visitors this week, which has been lovely but tiring also. Having said that we also probably couldn’t have survived the week without their help with cooking, cleaning, food shopping and looking after Hayden. Plus Austin and I have been spoilt by an abundance of cards and presents, so a huge thank you to our family and friends for everything we really appreciate it!

The midwife came to see us on Wednesday (Day 3). I was a bit concerned as Austin hadn’t pooed since the Monday afternoon and not weed much either in the previous 24 hours. She weighed him and he had lost 7% of his birth weight, which was still within the normal range and he looked well, but because of this a midwife came the next day too. Thankfully by then he had started peeing and pooing! And we have now definitely reached the newborn korma stage of newborn bowel motions! He has also regained a bit of weight putting on 90 grams over 2 days!

Feeding wise, I have been mostly breastfeeding him, which he seemed to take to very quickly. The problem being that he has been wanting to feed what feels like all the time! Feeding like a demon! By this I mean clusters of several hours where he will feed pretty much constantly with perhaps a few 15-30 minute breaks in between. I have found this really difficult for a few reasons, firstly because its been really painful for my nipples (sorry for the overshare!). Secondly, because its meant I haven’t been able to spend much time with Hayden. Because of this we have resorted a few times to giving him a small 2-4oz bottle of formula, just so that me and my nipples could have a rest! I was bit worried about this because of him maybe getting lazy at the breast and just wanting the bottle or it affecting my milk production. Luckily neither of these things have happened, and like Mike said to me we are doing what we need to, to get through this period.

Hayden came into the hospital with my mum on Monday to meet Austin, and to be honest didn’t seem particularly interested in him either way. When we got home however, he noticed him straight away and was very sweet from the start. Even though Hayden is only 15 months old himself, he seemed to know intrinsically that Austin was a delicate newborn and that he needed to be gentle. He already loves to give kisses and cuddles to his baby brother, although doesn’t always manage to be as gentle as he intends! It completely melts my heart to see both of the them together like this, I can’t wait to watch their brotherly bond grow!

He is already starting to fill out and change in the face, probably all that milk! He has quite an expressive face, and is fond of frowning as you can see in the pictures!

We have had our first mini outing as a family too when we went to the park on Saturday. It was really lovely to just get out and get some fresh air for everyone, plus got to try out the double pram for the first time!

Think that’s probably all for now, but I hope to do monthly updates on the blog of Austins progress so look out for those.

Thanks for reading.

He’s gorgeous and sounds like he’s doing well. I don’t envy those early days of cluster feeding, I remember them well, sounds like you have a plan that’s working though. Congratulations!! ❤

Aw, congratulations! Austin is just gorgeous! So glad he is putting weight on, but sorry that he isn’t giving mummy too much rest! You are so right, it is important to spend time with Hayden, especially as he is probably going to be feeling a little left out or bemused about the whole new little brother situation, so hopefully hungry boy will settle himself down a little! Enjoy your new baby x
