As you are now a big brother, I wanted to write an update on how you’ve been getting on. We finally seem to be over the last 2-3 months of what seemed like constant viral illnesses, thankfully and now you seem more back to your old smiley self again!
Although you are still not walking independently yet (I think you probably could, but lack the confidence), you really enjoy walking and charging around with your walker! Even more so since we’ve started taking you outside with the walker! So much so that you are no longer interested in going on anything in the park that you previously loved; the swings and slider (Bristol colloquialism for slide) and instead just want to March around following other children with your walker. Either that or chase after the pigeons! You are gradually getting there though darling, taking a few tentative steps on your own!
Now that the weather is starting to improve and spring has begun, I will endeavour to get out and about more and explore, as you seem to really love being outside, I’ve got your puddle suit and wellies at the ready! This week in particular has been more like summer than spring and you have been enjoying our newly laid garden, which is so lovely to see!
Teething seems to have taken a short hiatus again now that you have 2 bottom teeth and the top 4 teeth. Still less than most of your friends but you don’t struggle with food and I hated seeing you in pain with it, so a well earned break for you and me is a good thing I think!
Talking of food, you have always been such a good little eater from when we first weaned you. Initially at 4 months with some purée food and then at 6 months when we decided to try baby led weaning. Initially both Mike and I were sceptical about this method, but you took to it really well and were soon gnawing on a chicken drumstick! Thankfully you are not a fussy eater and eat most things that we give you, and we all sit down together for tea and have the same thing. Your favourite foods are chilli con carne with rice, pasta bolengnase, smoked salmon (yes I know posh toddler/expensive taste alert!!), yoghurt and cake! As I type these favourite foods I realise there is no mention of fruit or veg, although not his favourites he is happy to munch down most veg and thoroughly enjoys most fruit, having banana and clementines most days. He has also just discovered pineapple which seems to be a hit. You are also becoming increasingly proficient at using your cutlery, which is great as it allows daddy and I a chance to eat our dinner hot!
As I have mentioned in previous posts you have never been a particularly good sleeper, at least not on your own! Often preferring to be cuddled to sleep or co-sleeping. Initially you were in our room in the next to me crib. By 6 months you were too big and we attempted to move you into your cot in your own room. Needless to say this backfired spectacularly and before long you were in bed with us. Now we only have a regular sized double bed and you are a massive fidget (as am I to be honest) so this really didn’t work well. We compromised in the end by setting up your cot next to our bed. By 9 months you were sleeping much better staying in your cot all night but still waking quite frequently, being easily settled I was next to you. When you were 10 months we braved moving you and your cot back into your room. You would always seem to settle in the evening really well when daddy would put you to bed, but then wake frequently from midnight onwards. Only being settled after being sat with and soothed and shushed for 20 minutes a time. This didn’t always do the trick and we would often end up bringing you into bed with us at some point during the night.
These disturbed nights of sleep for both of us, only seemed to get worse during the next few months as you seem to be either teething or unwell with some virus or another. However during the last month or so, things seemed to have improved again. You are now going to sleep and staying in your cot every night, waking occasionally but often settling yourself or if not with a brief visit from us to give you back your dummy. I am hoping, perhaps naively that sleep wise you will continue to improve and we may yet to completely sleeping through the night!! Well a mummy can dream anyway!
Since I started writing this post, you have become a big brother to baby Austin. I know it must be really difficult for you with the sudden intrusion of a newborn baby, but overall you have dealt with it really well and mostly have been extremely sweet and gentle with your new baby brother. It’s so endearing to see.
You seem really grown up recently, your understanding is good and improving everyday. You can get quite fraustrated at times though when you want something but are unable to always communicate it. We have started to see some toddler tantrums beginning too, which I am already not a fan of at all!
You are really enjoying nursery on Friday and love playing with your toys. You love playing with other people but are also very good at playing by yourself. Your favourite toys at the moment are your Thomas trains (pretty much anything Thomas is a hit!), your JCB truck, walker, soft ball and books.
As jealous as I am sometimes, it’s also lovely to see your close relationship with daddy. You too are like buddies on the same wavelength! Daddy has even managed to get you interested in steam trains like him!
The last 15 months with you have changed my life, I have loved watching you change and learn new skills all the time. You have become such a little person with a great personality, you have a great sense of humour always laughing and smiling (when your not having a tantrum! Lol). You unfortunately take after me with your stubborn streak though! I am really looking forward to doing lots of things with you this summer, and seeing how you will continue to grow and develop.
Lots of Love
